Tonight on Sky Cult “Saving Private Ryan”, directed by Steven Spielberg, which tells about D-Day, the landing in Normandy of the allied troops during the Second World War. The protagonist is Captain Miller (Tom Hanks who turns 65 today) who, after having escaped the bloody battle on the French beach, commissioned by his superiors to track down the soldier James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon), the only survivor of 4 brothers. The high command have decided to dismiss him and send him back to the US. However, when Miller eventually finds the soldier and tells him that his brothers are all dead, Ryan refuses to leave the battlefield. The film, famous above all for the scene of great visual impact that reconstructs the landing at Omaha Beach in which about 2,000 American soldiers died, achieved great success with audiences and critics. Spielberg manages to flawlessly convey the horror of war in which there are not only episodes of heroism, but also abuse, crimes and stories of cowardice. Costing 70 million dollars, “Saving Private Ryan” earned over 481 million at the box office and in 1999 won 5 Oscars (direction, photography, editing, sound and sound effects).
