Saxony has long been calling for a drastic change of course on the issue of asylum. The Interior Minister also points to the high migration pressure at the borders – now he is being more specific.

Saxony’s Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) is pushing for “important emergency measures” on the issue of migration. “The federal government needs a master plan to effectively initiate the urgently needed change in its asylum policy,” he told the German Press Agency. This includes border controls with significantly more intensive rejections, “including of people who want to enter from a safe third country with asylum applications” as well as immediate deportations of repeat and serious offenders to Syria, Afghanistan and the Maghreb states.

Schuster’s five-point list of demands also provides for immediate arrest for foreign serious criminals and dangerous individuals who are required to leave the country “until they leave voluntarily”. In addition, federal departure centers would have to be set up, family reunification for those entitled to subsidiary protection and the voluntary admission program for Afghanistan from 2022 would have to be stopped.

“The aim is to drastically reduce access in the short term, while at the same time consistently increasing the number of particularly problematic people who are required to leave the country,” said Schuster. “I believe that diplomatic negotiations with Afghanistan and Syria are possible and appropriate given the security situation.”
