The Saxon regional church is asking for donations for Armenian Christians in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict region. Thousands of Armenians have already fled, leaving behind an estimated 120,000 people whose native language is Armenian, as the regional church office announced on Thursday. Many have already packed, but they don’t have enough gas to get away.

“Armenia is expecting a large wave of refugees,” the statement said. Accommodation and food are urgently needed there. The situation is dramatic, reported Pastor Hovhannes Hovsepyan. They are preparing for all Christians to flee the region. “We need as much as you can give,” he asked.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a predominantly Armenian-inhabited enclave in Azerbaijan, over which the two former Soviet republics have been fighting for decades. The region broke away in the 1990s after a bloody civil war. Last week, after brief, violent attacks, authoritarian Azerbaijan forced the government of the internationally unrecognized Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) to give up and conquered the area. This was followed by a mass exodus of Armenians, who feared violence and persecution from the victors.
