He was only elected to office in 2021 with a large majority. Now Eberhard Fugmann wants to put his presidency of SC Freiburg on hold. A letter from the club indicates the reasons.

After almost three years in office, President Eberhard Fugmann has unexpectedly left his post at SC Freiburg on September 1st and will no longer stand as a candidate in the upcoming election. This is stated in the letter from the Baden Bundesliga football club inviting members to the general meeting on October 10th. “The decisive factor is the different opinions on the design of the office,” it says.

The honorary council, in consultation with the board of directors and the supervisory board, has decided that no new president will be elected at the upcoming general meeting. Instead, the office is up for debate. It must be discussed whether the office should “be continued in principle or in its current form”. There are different opinions on this.

The former Freiburg school principal Fugmann was elected as the new SC president with a large majority in October 2021 and would now have had to stand for re-election. Fugmann succeeded Fritz Keller, who resigned in 2019. In the meantime, the position had been vacant.

Keller resigned from his post in 2019 and then became the new president of the German Football Association. The long-time SCF official’s term of office lasted just two years. After sharp criticism of his conduct within the association and in public and a scandal surrounding a Nazi comparison, Keller was no longer trusted by the presidents of the state and regional associations. Shortly afterwards, Keller resigned from his post as DFB President in May 2021.
