They want to demolish the historic complex in order to build luxury housing in its place

A scandal flares up on the net around the Rogozhsky garages – a monument of constructivism of the 1950s, which is not officially recognized as such. The car depot worked until 1999, and then was transferred by Yuri Luzhkov to the Moscow Transport Museum, which placed a large collection of vintage cars there. The museum was closed three years ago for renovation. The building really fell into a deplorable state, but it can be restored. However, the update did not happen. Instead, the building was sold in 2022 to a private company that plans to demolish the historic complex to build luxury housing in its place. Local residents and bloggers are sounding the alarm.

The building, built in the 1950s for Automobile Forwarding Plant No. 4 on Rogozhsky Val 9/2, stands out for its “bright architecture against the background of general grayness,” writes the blog Autoghosts. Indeed, over its long history, Muscovites have become accustomed to an interesting place, and it became very popular when a museum of vintage cars was opened there, which existed within the walls of the complex from 2003 to 2019. After the closure for reconstruction, they expected that the monument of constructivism would gain a second life and again become a point of attraction. They rejoiced early. This year the building passed into private hands and now it has completely different plans. The complex was sold at auction at a starting price of 606.1 million rubles. In its place, they are going to build an elite residential complex.

“Another residential complex is simply objectively not needed in this place. There is already a lot of housing, and new social infrastructure facilities are not being built – schools, kindergartens and clinics. In addition, the construction will lead to traffic jams on Rogozhsky Val and in neighboring neighborhoods, ”writes the head of the Tagansky municipal district, politician Ilya Sviridov, in his blog.

He urged to protect the retro-garages on Rogozhsky Val, wrote a request to the Mayor of Moscow, but the other day a meeting of the Council of Deputies of United Russia took place, where the majority refused to support the initiative. Then Sviridov began collecting signatures for a petition in defense of the Rogozhsky garages, which was already supported by many people. The other day, a meeting of local residents with deputies Sergei Mitrokhin and Elena Shuvalova took place, who promised to send requests “to the highest level” with a call to preserve the retro garages. Activists call for the creation of a museum or cultural center in the historical complex. For example, blogger Dmitry Front suggested creating an industrial design museum there.

“There were times when people went there every weekend with the whole family,” says Alexander Rostotsky, a local resident, musician and artist, to MK. – This is a grandiose structure, it is a pity if it disappears.

Activists intend to write a letter to the president. Suddenly help.
