The South American province of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, received heavy rains last Tuesday. Authorities say 30 days of rain fell in just 3 hours. Heavy rains in a single day caused severe flooding in most parts of the state, including rivers.
The floodwaters inundated the city, causing landslides and submerging many homes. The mountainous Petropolis region was particularly hard hit by the heavy rains. Heavy rains have caused floods in various parts of the state. Thousands of homes were flooded.
Traffic was completely paralyzed as roads were flooded. Also, a large number of vehicles parked on the roads were swept away in the floods. It said 24 people had been rescued from the landslide and more than 439 had lost their homes.
