by time news

On 23 December 1992, “Scent of a Woman – Profumo di donna”, a film by Martin Brest, remake of the 1974 film “Profumo di donna”, directed by Dino Risi, was released in the USA. The protagonist is Al Pacino who plays Frank Slade, a retired colonel who was blinded after an accident. Over the long Thanksgiving weekend, the officer’s relatives go on vacation and entrust the grumpy military to high school student Charles Simms (Chris O’Donnell). The latter has the task of keeping him company at home in New England but for the holidays the officer has a different program: to go to New York and enjoy one last weekend before committing suicide. Charles manages to avoid the tragedy, helps the lieutenant colonel to regain the joy of living and the two become friends. In the end it will be the soldier who will offer Charles valuable advice and with his rhetorical ability will prevent the expulsion of the high school student from school. “Scent of a Woman” enhances the histrionic qualities of Al Pacino who finally gets the Oscar with this role. Cult are the scenes in which the Hollywood star dances the tango with the actress Gabrielle Anwar and drives a Ferrari. Although the ending appears a bit rhetorical and honeyed, the film manages to balance the hilarious scenes with the more dramatic ones. At the box office it is a great success: it cost 31 million dollars, collects 134 and in 1993 gets 4 Oscar nominations, winning however only the one for the best leading actor.
