The European Union could propose to the International Olympic Committee and Thomas Bach o Marathon to take place on its original route, here in Athens, regardless of where the Olympic Games will be held, said shortly before the start of the 40th Athens Authentic Marathon Margaritis Schinas, vice-president of the European Commission.
“It is an event that is directly linked to the history of the Olympic Games. It is rooted in history and I think it is a case that, if we all fight it together, the municipality, the government, we from Europe, we can succeed”, he noted.

“With two wars in our immediate neighborhood this year, we wanted to be one of the institutional supporters of the Authentic Athens Marathon,” he added.
Mr. Schinas emphasized that it is “a large international pan-European event of great scope, which also brings European values to the fore: the need for peace, truce, inclusion, tolerance for the different”.
