English Afternoon Tea is said to have been invented by Queen Victoria’s maid – to bridge the time between lunch and dinner. In the suite of Victoria Empress Friedrich, the daughter of the famous British queen, many women and a few men have gathered at the best hour of the afternoon. At tables for two, they spend the afternoon under stucco and chandelier light, with classical sounds and between oil paintings. Wilhelm II’s mother is said to have arranged some things herself at her widow’s residence, today’s Schlosshotel Kronberg.

Before the guests choose from eleven types of tea, Rade Zinaic brings sparkling wine. The castle hotel employee is actually retired, but continues to serve with passion at teatime. For example a fantastic Golden Assam from India. An employee carries in cake stands, one at each of the flat tables, after which the tea at twilight is also called “low tea”. There are sandwiches on the bottom floor. The combination of cheddar, truffle and egg is particularly aromatic. But cucumber dill cream cheese, salmon honey mustard and pastrami are also convincing.

Clotted cream and strawberry jam

Some visitors have a special reason to enjoy the hour and a half in Victoria’s private chamber: an older couple is celebrating their wedding anniversary, a woman has given the afternoon to her best friend, and a young man and his mother are celebrating her birthday.

Zinaic also offers green tea. Anyone who thought they didn’t particularly like it will be proven wrong by the velvety Superior Gyokuro from Japan. He makes you want the petits fours from floor two, such as the pistachio tart with shortcrust pastry and the coffee praline. Because the cup is empty again, a Plum and Cinnamon is poured with the smallest pastries – a sweet in itself.

The top tiered plate holds pots of clotted cream and strawberry jam. There are also scones. The wedding anniversary has read the golden rules of teatime: “And now they are plucked?” Exactly: cutting is taboo. If you still manage to do that, get a piece of Prince of Hesse cake and try the whisky. Then everyone rises to take a tour of Victoria’s other rooms. Dinner may be canceled.
