“The goal was to give them back the feeling that they are human beings and not kidnapped,” says Adi Reinsilvar, the administrative director at Schneider Children’s Hospital in Petah Tikva, part of which has become a reception center for children who have returned from captivity by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. So that they don’t feel like a hospital.’

Reinsilvar first told about the preparation procedure for converting the hospital to treat the released abductees, and more importantly – to the place of their first meeting with the family members: “When we started preparing the complex, the most important thing for us was to give them a feeling of home. We thought about what home is and what allows a person to feel at home. We put household items in everyone’s room, a brass blanket, clothes in sizes and colors that suit them, and more pampering towels than those in the hospital.’

“There were signs on the doors with the names of the families, and on the beds were the clothes, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a teddy bear, pampering fur slippers, lipstick and light makeup,” she adds. “Besides the bedrooms, there is a family compound with pampering donated furniture, and a very well-equipped and pleasant play area.

We have a completely new building to which one of the hospital’s departments will soon move. This allowed us to give them very pampering conditions, of high-class hotels, in brand new rooms. The thinking was to turn the rooms into hotel rooms – although the beds are hospital beds, we added regular beds to the rooms to allow the family members to sleep together with the returnees. We allowed those who can sleep on a normal bed with a thick mattress and not a hospital bed.

A menu adapted to malnutrition prepared by chefs Moshik Roth and Assaf Granit

Regarding the food the abductees ate on the day they arrived at the hospital, Reinsilver shares that it was prepared by the dieticians at the hospital. “People returning from captivity should eat according to a strict protocol, which will prevent the ‘refeeding syndrome’ that may develop after a period of malnutrition. They should eat a lot of carbohydrates and only fresh food.

The dietician gave the cooking instructions to Moshik Roth, whose services were donated by the Amdox Israel company where Moshik Roth serves as the house chef. Moshik cooked the meals for the abductees according to the dietician’s instructions, and also donated meals for the family members for the first day in the hospital. The next day, Ruthie Russo and Asaf Granit contributed indulgent food services, the abductees and their families could choose dishes from a menu prepared just for them.’

“Of course, there were also a lot of logistical details to be ironed out, and for the logistical thinking, a military team is accompanying the operation,” Reinsilver continues. “It included a lot of thinking about security arrangements, about parking, about the ways in which the families and the abductees themselves would arrive. It was decided that the families would arrive independently for security reasons and to make them comfortable.
