In Monday’s comments, the German media wrote about Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidek as the savior of the German Social Democracy (SPD). On Sunday, he led his party to victory in state elections, narrowly defeating the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD).

According to the magazine Der Spiegel, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s party won, but the Chancellor himself lost and must continue to worry about his political career. The debate about whether Scholz can lead the SPD in next year’s parliamentary elections may have stopped for a short time, according to most German media, but it is far from over.

The Social Democracy won the election in the East German state of Brandenburg on Sunday with 30.9 percent of the vote, followed by the AfD, which the Brandenburg counterintelligence registers as suspected of far-right activities, in second place with 29.2 percent of the vote.

At the same time, public opinion polls in recent weeks have predicted a victory for the AfD. In the Brandenburg elections, the worst result since 1990 was achieved by the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with 12.1 percent, which thus finished behind Sahra Wagenknecht’s new left-wing Alliance party (BSW) with 13.5 percent.

According to Der Spiegel magazine, Sunday night’s winner and the biggest loser come from the same political party: the SPD. The reason is that Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Woidke won the election mainly because he tried to distance himself as much as possible from the politics of the unpopular Scholz government in Berlin. “Ultimately, one can say: A vote for Woidke was also a vote against Scholz. That’s how far the chancellor is,” wrote Der Spiegel.

Also, the news website Focus magazine attributes the victory of the SPD in Brandenburg to the fact that the local prime minister acted as “anti-Scholz”. The debate about the future of Chancellor Scholz and his government of the SPD, the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) may die down for a while after the Brandenburg elections, but it won’t last long and, according to Focus, it will break out again in full force.

The newspaper Die Welt also wrote in a commentary that Woidke, by leading the SPD to victory in Brandenburg, saved Scholz, but perhaps only temporarily. Even the tabloid Bild wrote that in the debate about Chancellor Scholz’s political future, Sunday’s result rather means a “rest break”. “Scholz cannot claim victory. Woidke distanced himself from him in the election campaign,” he said.

According to the ntv news website, Sunday’s elections fully revealed Scholz’s weakness, according to him, the Social Democrats can still win the elections to the Bundestag next year, but only without Scholz.
