Schools in three states are rolling out non-lethal, pepper-spraying drones designed by Austin-based Mithril Defense to reach and disorient active shooters within 15 seconds. Backed by state funding in Florida and Georgia, the pioneering initiative aims to bridge the gap before law enforcement arrives.

With gun violence impacting hundreds of thousands of students over the last two decades, educational institutions continue searching for immediate technological interventions. The new Campus Guardian Angel system offers a commercial service that deploys autonomous, non-lethal aircraft directly upon receiving an active threat alert.

Where the Pilot Programs Are Launching

At least nine schools across Florida, Georgia, and Colorado will feature the specialized storage boxes housing the drones this year. In Florida, the legislature provided $557,000 in funding for a one-year pilot program divided among three school districts.

Anderson High School near Fort Lauderdale, and Godby High School in Tallahassee. Meanwhile, state legislators in Georgia approved a roughly -$500,000 pilot program to test the drone systems across five schools, while Colorado’s John Adams Academy in Sterling Ranch plans to self-fund its inaugural year.

How the Drone Deployment Works

When an emergency occurs, teachers can activate the system using an app or classroom panic buttons. The aircraft are stored securely inside the buildings and can accelerate to reach a suspect in as little as 15 seconds—a fraction of the three to eight minutes it typically takes police to arrive.

Operating entirely under human control, expert pilots based in a Tactical Operations Center in Austin, Texas, direct the flight path using integrated technology. The drones are capable of breaking through glass doors and windows, broadcasting sirens, flashing lights, deploying pepper spray pellets, and executing rapid loops to distract an assailant.

Security Measures and Human Oversight

Developers emphasize that the systems do not rely on artificial intelligence for targeting or deployment decisions. Instead, the drones feature encryption protocols matching those used in high-level classified communication systems by the U.S. military and intelligence services.
