Kabul: Protest in front of the Ministry of Education in Kabul demanding the reopening of secondary schools for girls. Girls’ schools reopened last week but were closed within hours. The girls themselves came out in protest against this.
The girls protested with books and placards. Slogans chanted that education is a fundamental right and not your political agenda. Al Jazeera reports that the protesters dispersed after Taliban members arrived on the scene.
The Taliban announced last Wednesday that it would reopen girls’ schools. However, after the opening, all the schools were closed. The reason for this is not clear. The Taliban have said that girls should not be allowed in classes above the sixth grade until a new order is issued.
The Taliban had said in a press conference after coming to power in Afghanistan that women would be allowed to study and work.
At the same time, foreign countries have expressed dissatisfaction with the Taliban’s backtracking on its promise of women’s education. The United States has canceled a meeting with the Taliban in Qatar.
