Scientists study ancient geological fossils, excavations and other archaeological finds to recreate the appearance of our planet in the distant past. Modern research indicates that clues to Earth’s past may be found in archaeological finds discovered in a remote region of the southern African highlands known as the Barberton Greenstone Belt.
In this region, scientists have found early and extensive geological formations that have long been challenging to interpret. New research provides new perspectives and opportunities for a deeper understanding of the past eras of our planet.
Modern scientists have concluded that the key to unlocking “this code” lies in young geological formations discovered at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of New Zealand. They believe the discovery sheds light on what the Earth looked like in its early days, helping us better understand its evolution.
Experts from Victoria University of Wellington began their work by developing a new detailed geological map of the Barberton Greenstone Belt. During the study, they were able to identify a section of ancient seabed that formed about 3.3 billion years ago.
In fact, the base rock in this area is a mixture of sediments that formed on the seabed off the coast of New Zealand approximately 20 million years ago. In other words, what previously seemed incomprehensible and opaque turned out to be the remains of a massive earthquake, with deposits of both land and seafloor mixed together on the surface.
Researchers now claim that traces of the Earth may be found in the depths of the southwest Pacific Ocean shortly after its formation.
