Scientists have discovered new vulnerabilities in coronavirus

by time news

German scientists were able to detect unchanged areas in the coronavirus, which causes COVID-19. Using this information, it is possible to develop effective drugs against the virus.

Experts from the University of Frankfurt compared the genomes of the two coronaviruses SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. The latter was the cause of the pandemic. Experts have found that both viruses have the same regions of the genome that do not mutate. They announced their discovery in an article that was published in the journal Angewandte Chemie.

For their research, scientists used the method of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The molecules are first labeled with stable isotopes, and then they are exposed to a strong magnetic field. Thus, it is possible to detect bonds between the smallest molecules.

They managed to find three molecules, each of which binds to only one region of the RNA of the virus. Perhaps it will be possible to influence them with the help of drugs and block the reproduction of coronavirus in an infected cell.
