Fish oil supplements can speed muscle healing in aged rats. Scientists at the University of South Florida have come to this conclusion; the results of the study were published in the journal Nutrients.
The experiment was conducted on old rats (22 months old) and adult rats (eight months old). Before the experiment began, scientists had noticed that the recovery of muscle cells after injury in aged rats was slow.
Fish oil (containing 45% eicosapentaenoic acid and 10% docosahexaenoic acid) was added to the animals’ diet and the regeneration process began to be monitored. After seven days, in 78% of the aged rats, the rate of healing of muscle damage was the same as that of their young relatives. Scientists have suggested that fish oil may help improve cell membrane repair, which in turn speeds up the healing process.
The researchers also noted that taking fish oil supplements can be beneficial for humans as well. Older adults engage in less physical activity, but are also susceptible to mechanical muscle injuries during normal exercise and daily activities and may also suffer muscle bruises from falls, even without fractures.
