The substance piperine in black pepper can block the spread of the coronavirus. This conclusion was made by St. Petersburg scientists from the Institute of Cytology of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. Pasteur after research, the corresponding publication was posted on November 9 in the journal Biomedicines.

According to one of the authors of the article, Olga Ostroumova, Chief Researcher at the Institute of Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the creation of drugs that block proteins on the surface of a human cell, to which the infectious agent (SARS-CoV-2) is attached, can help reduce the rate of spread of COVID-19. Since the coronavirus is constantly mutating, these proteins also change, and the drugs are no longer effective.

In this regard, the research, Ostroumova explained, was based on the study of substances that block not a protein compound, but the fusion of lipid membranes (membranes) of human cells and coronavirus.

“For this, plant alkaloids were used. For example, the most effective compound – piperine – is contained in black pepper, has been known for a long time and is used as part of bioactive additives for various medical purposes, ”the scientist told Vedomosti.

The spread of SARS-CoV-2 is stopped due to the fact that the viral lipid envelope, the properties of which changes piperine, loses its ability to fuse with the membranes of human cells, and the virus, in turn, does not penetrate into the cells, added Ostroumova. She concluded that COVID-19, at the same time, will not be able to become resistant to piperine, since the virus cannot completely get rid of the lipid membrane, and mutations of the virus do not practically affect it.

On November 10, Alexander Gintsburg, Director of the Gamaleya Research Center, said that the institute is developing a drug from antibodies for the treatment of patients with coronavirus. The first tests, he noted, will begin in January 2022.

On November 9, the chief freelance specialist in infectious diseases of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Professor Vladimir Chulanov, announced the completion of studies of several drugs that can be used to help patients with COVID-19.

On the same day, the head of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) Veronika Skvortsova announced the completion of the second phase of clinical trials of the etiotropic drug for coronavirus Mir-19.

Against the background of a worsening epidemiological situation, the Russian authorities are urging residents to get vaccinated in order to protect their health and take care of their loved ones. Citizens are vaccinated for free. Five vaccines against coronavirus have been registered in the country: Sputnik V, which became the first vaccine against COVID-19 in the Russian Federation and the world, as well as Sputnik Light, EpiVacCorona, EpiVacCorona-N and KoviVak.

All relevant information on the situation with the coronavirus is available on the websites of stopcoronavirus.rf and access vsem.rf, as well as by the hashtag #WeVotte. Coronavirus hotline: 8 (800) 2000-112.
