Followers of one of the new religions of the XXI century – Scientology – in Latvia want to register the Scientology congregation as a religious organization in the Enterprise Register. Such a decision was taken by the founders’ meeting at the end of August. For the time being, the Ministry of Justice comments on such a wish cautiously.
Among the followers of Scientology are a number of Hollywood celebrities, thus giving the religious direction quite a lot of publicity around the world. The Church of Scientology has eight so-called celebrity centers, of which the Hollywood Center is the largest – such movie stars as Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, John Travolta, Lisa Mary Presley, etc. have been involved in it.
Scientology was founded in 1954 by science fiction writer and philosopher Lafayette Ronald Hubbard. The USA recognized this movement as a religion in 1974. Scientology is a controversial international religious movement associated with a special form of psychotherapy – dianetics – and proclaims that its teachings strengthen a person’s spiritual self-awareness.
in the Ministry of Justice For days in essence, it does not comment on the specific case, but provides a general insight into what criteria must be met in order to register: “The procedure for registering religious organizations is defined in the Law on Religious Organizations. To register a religious organization, it is necessary to submit an application to the Register of Companies, attaching documents. The documents may differ depending on the type of religious organization they wish to register.”
