In the new chapter of the saga – entitled “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” and airing October 16 on HBO Max – the brainy of the cartoon created by Hanna-Barbera falls victim to love at first sight for designer Coco Diablo
After Peppa Pig and the character with two mothers, another classic of children’s TV (but one that adults also like) chooses the path of inclusiveness. This is Scooby-Doo who, in the last chapter of the saga – entitled “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” and aired from October 16 on the HBO Max platform, for now not available in Italy – shows the coming out of Velma Dinkley, who is the victim of love at first sight for designer Coco Diablo.
“Free to live her sexuality”
For the truth that the brains with glasses and always dressed in a red skirt and an orange shirt was a lesbian it was always suspected and James Gunn himself, screenwriter of the first live Scooby-Doo films, had confirmed it in a ‘ interview with Variety, saying, however, that the production had always been reluctant to the idea of revealing Velma’s homosexuality. “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script – Gunn had in fact said – but the production kept the waters calm, making it ambiguous (in the filmed version), then nothing (in the released version) and in the end with a boyfriend (in the sequel) “. Now, however, times have changed and the character created by Hanna-Barbera is free to live her sexuality in the light of the sun, even if her coming out – as expected – did not meet unanimous approval on the other side of the ocean, where there are many who object to the choice of changing the narrative line of a film in the name of “politically correct” at any cost.
