Wanted keeper for an uninhabited island for thirty years. The unusual announcement was posted on Facebook by the Isle Martin Trust, charity owner of Isle Martin, less than two square kilometers of surface just five minutes by boat off the coast of Scotland, near the town of Ullapool. The news was reported on the BBC’s website, which dedicated an extensive report on the affair.

The Trust deems it necessary to entrust to someone, a person or a couple, the care of the island, a birdwatching paradise and home to an Algae festival (from 6 to 12 September), with two beaches and a museum hut and frequented by not many tourists despite the great naturalistic interest. The owner body, to increase the appeal of the area, also aims to make the island plastic free and sustainable. The caretaker – according to the announcement – will have to be able to lead a boat to the mainland in case of need, will have to take care of the island with small maintenance interventions, will have to clean the public toilets, enforce anti-Covid regulations and welcome tourists. You can also set up a refreshment point or a small bar. Not for a job to get rich with: whoever accepts the job, stated in the advertisement, will be able to earn up to £ 150 a week, even if the commitment should not exceed three hours a day. On the other hand, the caretaker will not have large expenses, in particular for bills: there is no running water, electricity is guaranteed by a small generator capable of powering at most a small computer or some light.

Isle Martin has housed a monastery, a herring maturing station and a mill over the years. The Trust focuses on some enthusiasts who want to live an experience in contact with nature. According to Becky Thomson, director of the property owner, If someone liked the land, they could revive our garden if they wanted to. It is a quiet place, there are no cars, no roads. Only nature. The deadline for submitting applications expires on 1st June.
