Homeland Today: On the grounds of Scottish Celtic Stadium, the colors of Palestine were displayed and the country’s resistance flags fluttered in their splendour, before the start of Celtic’s match against its Spanish guest, Atletico Madrid, in the European Champions League.
Thousands of Celtic fans raised the Palestinian flag with pride and aggression. The fans of the Scottish club “TIFO” clearly displayed the colors of the Palestinian flag in the lower half of the stands before the start of the match, where about twenty large flags were raised in the part adjacent to the entry area for the players of both teams. This was part of Celtic fans’ expression of their firm solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
While thousands of small flags sparkled around the stadium when the two teams appeared, a large portion of the fans sang expressive songs glorifying the resistance and mobilizing global solidarity with the Palestinian cause. The Scottish fans sang the famous Liverpool club song, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” with passion, and also the famous Italian song, “Bella Ciao,” known as an anthem of resistance to the Italian revolutionaries. With this artistic expression, Celtic fans showed their solidarity and strong support for the Palestinian cause.
This is likely to result in strict disciplinary action by UEFA against Celtic, as the continental confederation has previously imposed fines on the club for fans waving Palestinian flags.
On the day of the match, the club issued a statement asking fans not to bring Palestinian flags to the match stadium, after the club’s fans association, the “Green Brigade,” called for “bravely raising the Palestinian flag” in support of Gaza, which has been subjected to Israeli aggression for more than two weeks. It left more than 5,000 martyrs, tens of thousands wounded, and hundreds missing under the rubble.
The club’s statement said: “We have witnessed death, violence and destruction in the Holy Land in recent weeks, as thousands of people, men, women and children, were killed, injured and displaced.”
The statement, which was reported by the British News Agency on Wednesday, continued: “We are witnessing a tragedy of a horrific scale, and as the matter continues, everyone at Celtic is praying for all the victims.”
The ancient club stressed in its statement, “Against this background of conflict and pain, sport can promote peace and show humanity and compassion for all those who are still suffering.”
He explained, “For the club’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid this evening, Celtic and Atletico Madrid players and the technical staff will wear black armbands, as a show of respect and support for all those affected by the conflict.”
Celtic fans always shine with elegance and uniqueness in the European stands. They were the first to rush towards solidarity with Palestine after the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation, as on October 7, the flags of Palestine were raised proudly in the stands of their stadium. Banners bearing strong phrases about “Freedom for Palestine” and “Victory for the Resistance” were also raised during Celtic’s victory over its rival Kilmarnock in the Scottish League.
