Hawkins Exhibition & Workshop Explores Desire, Archives, and Collage in Vienna
A unique two-part event, organized in cooperation with Whothe Association for Queer Culture and history, will delve into the research of artist Richard Hawkins and offer participants a hands-on workshop exploring archival materials and collage techniques. The event, centered around Hawkins’ exhibition Potentialities, promises an immersive experience for those interested in art, history, and creative expression.
the event begins on March 19 with a guided tour of Hawkins’ exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien, led by Andreas Brunner,a founding member of Qwien. Hawkins’ work is characterized by intensive research into themes of desire and the lives and legacies of other artists, often drawing heavily on archival material.
Following the exhibition tour, the second part of the event will be a workshop held at Qwien, a Vienna-based association dedicated to queer Culture and History. Participants will gain exclusive access to Qwien’s extensive archive, offering a rare possibility to engage directly with past sources.
The workshop will focus on creating collages inspired by the style of scrapbooks found within Qwien’s magazine collection. Attendees will be able to scan, edit, and manipulate materials digitally, alongside utilizing analogue materials provided by Qwien. This blended approach encourages a dynamic exploration of artistic techniques and historical context.
while organizers recommend attending both the exhibition tour and the workshop for a complete experience, participation in each session is also available independently. This adaptability allows individuals to tailor their engagement to their specific interests and schedules.
