A mysterious golden object with a texture similar to human skin, which may be the egg of an unknown species, was found deep in the ocean off the coast of Alaska last Thursday.

“Something tried to get in…or get out,” said one of the researchers during the live broadcast of the remote-controlled dive, carried out by a team from the Seascape Alaska 5 expedition from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), ‘The Telegraph’ reported on Wednesday.

According to the first hypotheses, the shiny golden object, which would have a texture similar to human skin or silk, would probably be the outer shell of an egg of an unknown species, said the British media, since several marine species, such as sharks and rays, deposit their eggs in this way at the bottom of the water.

It could also be a new species of sea sponge, coral or Pacific barnacle, a kind of small crustacean.

“I just hope that when we touch him, something doesn’t decide to come out. It’s like the start of a horror movie. When the collective knowledge can’t identify it, it’s something weird. What kind of animal would lay an egg like that?” would have launched a second researcher, visibly perplexed.

The mysterious egg, found more than three kilometers below the surface at the site of an extinct volcano, was retrieved by a mechanical arm so that it could be examined on the surface of the water.

“In my 20 years of exploring the seabed, I have never seen anything like it. It’s always exciting to see new things, and I will be impatiently awaiting the analyzes of the sample to understand what it is,” reacted the professor of deep-sea ecology, Karry Howell, from the University of Plymouth at Mail Online.

According to her, there is a good chance that the object is linked to a new species, since it is estimated that more than a third of life in the ocean is still unknown, said “The Telegraph”.
