Singer Sean is famous as an entertainer who exerts a positive influence on our society.
Sean will run 81.5 km on August 15th, the 79th anniversary of liberation. The ‘815 Run’, which started in 2020 to honor the dedication and sacrifice of independence activists and to help their descendants, is already in its fifth year this year.
On the 2nd, Sean said on CBS Radio’s “Kim Hyun-jung’s News Show”, “I ran 81.5 km from 5 AM on Liberation Day, and then ran another 8.15 km with 8,150 people in the evening, for a total of 90 km that day.”
Sean explained how he started the ‘815 Run’, saying, “In 2020, the 75th anniversary of liberation, Lee Young-pyo said, ‘Brother, this year is the 75th anniversary of liberation, so shouldn’t you run 75 km? ‘ and for fun, I replied, ‘Of course. ‘” He continued, “After thinking about it carefully, I thought 81.5 km would be more meaningful than 75, so I recruited 3,000 people to run 8.15 km and received participation fees and corporate sponsorships with the intention of doing something meaningful.”
Regarding the number of recruits, he said, “We recruited 3,000 people in the first year, 3,500 the following year, and 8,150 last year, but they were all filled up,” and “We are recruiting 16,300 people this year, and about 11,000 people have been recruited so far.”
As for how to apply, he said, “If you go to the Habitat website, there is an application link. You can go there and choose from three distances to run: 3.1 km to commemorate March 1st Independence Movement Day, 4.5 km to commemorate independence in 1945, and 8.15 km for Liberation Day.”
Sean said, “The first year I ran 7 hours and 58 minutes, then 7 hours and 47 minutes, and then 7 hours and 25 minutes,” a whopping distance that’s about twice as long as a marathon. “Last year, I tried to break the 7 hour and 10 minute mark, so I hired pacers who could run 1km at a 5 minute and 20 second pace, but it was so hot and humid that the pacers couldn’t run at a 5 minute and 20 second pace, so I partially pulled them.”
Last year, Sean completed the 81.5 km race in 7 hours, 49 minutes and 47 seconds in 32 degree heat.
“Celebrities such as Lee Young-pyo, Jo Won-hee, Park Bo-gum, Im Si-wan, actress Yoon Se-ah, and actress Lee Si-young will be running together this year,” he said. “Park Bo-gum has been running with me as a pacer for three years now.”
Sean said while preparing for the 81.5 km run, “I lost three toenails on my left, two on my right, and now my right big toe is about to fall off, so now I have six toenails missing.”
Sean donated 1,537,944,302 won collected through the 815 Run last year to support a comfortable and safe haven for descendants of independence activists, raising a fund of 3.8 billion won over four years starting in 2020.
