Search for ghost officials: going through the process – AGP

by time news

Libreville, September 17 (AGP) – In its drive to clean up public finances, the Gabonese Prime Minister’s Office specified in a press release dated September 14 that “more than 13,000 civil servants who have abandoned their posts” will be placed on cash vouchers at the end of the current month. This decision follows the latest census of civil servants, for which thousands of supposed civil servants did not respond.

“(…) It appeared after audit that a little over 13,000 public agents are in a situation of manifest abandonment of their posts and continue to receive their salary unduly at the end of each month. Consequently, and in accordance with the principle of fairness of good administration, the Prime Minister, the person primarily responsible for the administration, has decided to place these agents under cash vouchers from this month of September 2024, for clarification,” explains the note from the Prime Minister’s office.

Go to the end of the procedure

The problem of ghost civil servants remains a concern in Gabon, with significant repercussions on public finances and the efficiency of the administration. For several years, the public authorities have been trying reforms to combat this phenomenon.

Public opinion wants the problem to be addressed in depth this time, by definitively eliminating these non-existent people and by making the perpetrators of these embezzlements face up to their responsibilities.

In 2008, the government of the regime that fell on August 30, 2023 had already carried out a biometric census that ended up revealing a surplus of 11,000 public agents. Those concerned had never really been worried.
