Search Underway for Missing German Resident of Gavdos Island

by time news
A state of alarm has been declared since the afternoon of Monday, August 12, in Gavdos, for the detection of a foreign national who has been living permanently on the island for the last decade.

As reported by ERT Chania, this is Nills, of German origin, who did not show up in the afternoon on Monday at the cafeteria where he works in the Ai Giannis area. Immediately, people who know him went to the old house he lives in, above the Ai Giannis settlement, found his uneaten food, but no trace of him.

The police, the fire department, people from the Gavdos Municipality, and campers living on the island were immediately notified and began searching the area’s paths without results so far. A well-known shipowner is on the island, who, as he informed, will provide his helicopter to assist in the search efforts.

The shipowner’s helicopter promptly conducted two search loops over the island, focusing on the regular routes that the missing person followed daily.

The search efforts include the island’s mayor, Lilian Stefanaki, with municipal staff, police officers, and citizens. For now, they are concentrating on a land area, but if deemed necessary, they will also expand into the sea.

Regarding the disappearance of the 50-year-old, a relevant announcement was made in a friends’ group of Gavdos on social media. Those who know Nills say that similar incidents have occurred in the past and hope to hear from him soon.

Residents of the area describe him as a “quiet” and “nice” guy, who in recent years chose to live in Gavdos, the news outlet reports.
