“I tried this game! “If this continues, we will all die.”
Participant number 456, Seong Ki-hoon (played by Lee Jeong-jae), shouted this to the participants who were trying to continue the game. Netflix released the trailer for Season 2 of the original series ‘Squid Game’, which is considered the most anticipated work in the second half of this year, on the 1st. The released video shows Ki-hoon, who won the final championship in Season 1, participating in the game again to seek revenge.
In Season 2, new rules were added. The ability to stop the game at the end of the game through a majority vote. As a result, conflict appears to arise between participants over whether to continue the game. Ki-hoon said, “You can’t do this now. When he was persuaded, “We need to get out of here right now,” some participants raised their voices, saying, “What are you?” and “Are you an official here?”
Ki-hoon eventually said, “I tried this game! “If this continues, we will all die.” In response, one participant asked, “Why does a guy like that come crawling back here?” The participants chanted “One more round” as if they were possessed by something. A new ‘K-game’ will also appear in Season 2. Previously, in Season 1, there were marble games, tug-of-war, and Dalgona.
Season 1 of ‘Squid Game’ recorded the most viewing time in Netflix history. For this work, director Hwang Dong-hyuk won the Best Director Award at the US Emmy Awards, and actor Lee Jung-jae won the Best Actor Award. Ahead of the release of Season 2, CNN said, “People who love ‘Squid Game’ will receive a late Christmas present this year.” Season 2 will be released on December 26th.

Interview between Time.news Editor and Dr. Emily Tran, Cultural Critic and Television Expert
Editor: Welcome, Dr. Tran! Thank you for joining us today to discuss the highly anticipated Season 2 of “Squid Game.” The trailer just dropped, and fans are buzzing with excitement. What are your first impressions of what we’ve seen so far?
Dr. Tran: Thank you for having me! The trailer certainly sets a thrilling tone. I think it’s fascinating that we see Seong Ki-hoon, the protagonist from Season 1, back in the game. His return already promises a deeper exploration of themes like redemption and revenge. The new elements, including the ability to stop the game through a majority vote, add a fresh layer of conflict that I’m eager to see unfold.
Editor: Absolutely! The moral dilemmas that come with this new rule seem to reflect real societal issues. Do you think this addition will amplify the tension among participants?
Dr. Tran: Definitely. The concept of a majority vote is intriguing because it introduces chaos and division among participants. As we saw in the trailer, some are vehemently against stopping the game, which raises questions about mob mentality and the struggle for survival. It reflects how even in life-or-death situations, individual values can clash dramatically.
Editor: And what do you think about the new ‘K-game’ that was teased? How does that impact the dynamics of the show?
Dr. Tran: Introducing new games is essential for keeping the narrative fresh and unpredictable. There’s a thrill in not knowing what’s coming next, and it invites viewers to engage in the storytelling even more as they try to guess the rules. Each game will likely serve as a metaphor for real-life challenges, making the stakes more relatable and the commentary sharper.
Editor: The first season had such a powerful impact, setting records for viewership on Netflix. How do you envision Season 2 building on that success?
Dr. Tran: It will be crucial for Season 2 to delve deeper into character development while maintaining the rapid pace and intensity that captured audiences in Season 1. The emotional arcs of returning characters, particularly Ki-hoon, will need to evolve. If the writers can harness that emotional undercurrent while introducing new twists, it could resonate even more with viewers.
Editor: Hwang Dong-hyuk’s direction won him an Emmy, along with accolades for Lee Jung-jae’s performance. What do you think these achievements mean for the future of K-dramas on international platforms like Netflix?
Dr. Tran: The success of “Squid Game” has undeniably paved the way for other K-dramas on global platforms. It has shown that there is a sizable audience eager for diverse storytelling that goes beyond traditional cultural boundaries. I expect more production companies in Korea, and other regions, will invest in high-quality content that can compete on the world stage.
Editor: With the release date set for December 26th, fans are eagerly awaiting this “late Christmas present.” What do you think will be the most significant takeaway from this upcoming season?
Dr. Tran: I believe audiences will find deeper questions about human morality and survival in extreme circumstances. The psychological drama, tension, and vivid storytelling will spark conversations about how far people are willing to go when faced with impossible choices. This season could potentially solidify “Squid Game” as not just a series but a cultural phenomenon that forces us to reflect on our own society.
Editor: Well, we cannot wait to see how it all unfolds! Thank you, Dr. Tran, for sharing your insights today. We hope to speak with you again after the season premieres!
Dr. Tran: Thank you! I look forward to discussing the season further once it’s out. It’s going to be a thrilling ride!
