The president of Seat, Wayne Griffits, announced on Monday that the company will invest 300 million euros in the construction of a battery cell assembly plant in Martorell (Barcelona), the company reported in a statement on Monday.

The project has been presented coinciding with the new Government call for the strategic project for economic recovery and transformation (Perte) for the electric and connected vehicle (VEC).

Griffiths explained that the new facilities “will assemble the cells that PowerCo will manufacture at the Sagunto (Valencia) gigafactory”, and that they will create 400 direct and 100 indirect jobs. “It will be connected to Workshop 10, where we will manufacture some of the Volkswagen Group electric cars, including the Cupra Raval. This will help streamline processes and reduce the carbon footprint,” he added.

The plant will have an area of 64,000 square meters and construction is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks and end in 2025.

15% deductions

Griffiths also explained that these are “fundamental facilities” for the company and that they represent a boost to plans to have a second platform in Martorell. He stressed that we are facing “a key moment” for the industry and recalled that both Seat and the Volkswagen Group are investing in sustainable mobility. Likewise, the executive claimed that the Spanish and European institutions “have to be convinced and get on the train” and that a legal framework be created that, in his words, ensures investment in the automotive sector.

“Public-private collaboration is essential to accelerate the transformation, and in Spain some steps have already been taken in the right direction,” he assured, while adding that the measure to deduct 15% of personal income tax for the purchase of electric vehicles it must be accompanied by more investment to expand the charging infrastructure.
