Seahawks Rookie WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba to Miss Time Due to Wrist Injury

Training camp for the Seattle Seahawks has been filled with excitement and standout performances, and one of the brightest spots has been rookie wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. However, his promising start has hit a setback as he is set to miss some time due to a wrist injury sustained in Saturday’s preseason win against the Dallas Cowboys.

After making a stunning 48-yard reception in the first half of the game, Smith-Njigba suffered what Seahawks coach Pete Carroll describes as a “slight fracture” in his wrist. The injury occurred at the end of the catch and run when Smith-Njigba put his hand down awkwardly.

“He’s going to get surgery, he’s with a hand specialist,” Carroll said. “We want to ensure that he gets back as soon and as safe as possible. We’re optimistic about his recovery, but it’s still uncertain. We’ll have to see what happens.”

The 20th overall pick in this year’s draft, Smith-Njigba’s absence raises concerns about whether he will be ready for the team’s season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on September 10. Carroll remained hopeful but couldn’t provide a definite answer.

Aside from Smith-Njigba, another injured receiver on the Seahawks roster is Dareke Young. The second-year wideout, who recently returned from a hip injury, is still struggling with his recovery and may require surgery. Carroll previously mentioned the possibility of a sports hernia issue.

“He’s got this abductor thing that he’s got to get looked at seriously,” Carroll explained. “He might have to get it fixed.”

However, there is some positive news in the receiving corps. Cade Johnson, who suffered a concussion in the Seahawks’ preseason opener, has returned to practice and should be available for this weekend’s preseason finale. Additionally, Easop Winson Jr., who missed the last game due to a groin injury, has returned to practice. Cody Thompson, who injured his shoulder in Saturday’s game, is day-to-day, and Carroll remains optimistic about his chances of making a swift recovery.

As the Seahawks continue their preparations for the upcoming season, these injuries serve as a reminder of the physical toll that training camp and preseason games can have on players. The team hopes for a quick and successful recovery for Smith-Njigba and all the other injured players as they look forward to starting the regular season strong.
