Seattle Seahawks Rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba Sidelined with Wrist Fracture

Seattle Seahawks rookie wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been diagnosed with a “slight fracture” in his left wrist, according to coach Pete Carroll. The injury occurred during Smith-Njigba’s impressive 48-yard catch-and-run in the second quarter of the team’s preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday night. Despite playing one more snap after the injury, Smith-Njigba was subsequently benched for the remainder of the game.

Carroll revealed that Smith-Njigba is expected to undergo surgery and will be evaluated by a specialist in Philadelphia. The team remains optimistic, with an estimated recovery time of three to four weeks. However, the exact duration of his absence is yet to be determined.

Selected as the No. 20 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, Smith-Njigba has showcased his talent with six receptions for 83 yards in Seattle’s first two preseason games. His absence will significantly impact the team’s offense during his recovery.

In related news, Carroll also provided updates on other players’ recoveries. Inside linebacker Jordyn Brooks, who underwent ACL surgery, is expected to make a return in time for the season opener. Safety Jamal Adams, who suffered a quad tendon rupture in September, could potentially return to practice tomorrow.

The Seahawks will need to make adjustments to their offense without Smith-Njigba. The team is likely to rely more heavily on their two-tight end packages, which were already utilized frequently last season. With players like versatile tight end Will Dissly, the team aims to maintain offensive dynamism despite the absence of Smith-Njigba.

As Smith-Njigba prepares for surgery, the Seahawks remain optimistic about his recovery timeline. However, his return for Week 1 is uncertain at this point. The team will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
