This February 6, the death of the former president of Chile Sebastián Piñera was confirmed, who died in a helicopter accident in the commune of Lago Ranco, Los Ríos Region, in Chile.

According to information collected by the media ‘La Tercera’, government sources confirmed that the former president was traveling with three other people on the aircraft, but they were found by emergency teams.

According to the same medium, the former president had been having lunch at the house of businessman José Cox, recognized as one of his closest friends.

Then he left in the aircraft, which he was piloting. He managed to advance a few meters, but lost control near the shore. The helicopter ended up submerged about 40 meters deep and members of the Navy, Firefighters, Carabineros and the Samu arrived at the scene.

At the time, his relatives and the survivors were directed to Cox’s residence, who found out about the accident at that very moment. Later, Piñera’s body was recovered from the depths of the lake and transported by a Navy boat.

This tragedy has made several people remember his last public appearances, among them a radio interview and a video in which he said a few words to former president Ricardo Lagos.

His last radio interview

According to the media ‘Bbcl’, his last interview was 20 days ago with ‘Radio Duna’, there he referred to different topics such as the possibility of returning to La Moneda, the security crisis in his country and also spoke about the current president Gabriel Boric .

“I am not going to run for the presidency for the third time, but I am going to continue to be very active and very passionate in the debate,” he commented at that time.

Likewise, he spoke about immigration, specifically due to the controversial trip to Cúcuta, Venezuela, in February 2019.

“There was never any call for Venezuelans to come to Chile,” commented Piñera, “the idea was to put pressure on aid at the border to come in to solve distressing problems that the population was experiencing. “That was the goal.”

(Don’t stop reading: Sebastián Piñera had already generated controversy for piloting his own helicopter).

His last video

His last public appearance on video was on January 30, when the video was published in which he dedicated a few words to former president Ricardo Lagos, who had announced his retirement from public life.

“Ricardo Lagos has been a great statesman and a valuable contribution to Chile,” he stated and added: “his enormous contribution to recovering our democracy in an exemplary manner and his permanent contribution to building a better Chile.”

At that moment, the former president concluded by saying that he is grateful for “the friendship with which he has distinguished me.”
