by time news

On Friday it was two years ago that the first cases of the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 were registered in Austria. On February 25, 2020, an Italian couple in Innsbruck received their positive test results, the two had probably been infected in Bergamo. In Germany alone, despite several lockdowns, 2.6 million infections have been detected since then, 14,700 people died of Covid-19, thousands had or are struggling with long-Covid consequences.

14,700 people have died of Covid-19 in this country so far

According to the US University Johns Hopkins (JHU) in Baltimore, which has been in charge of data collection since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been around 430 million confirmed infections and 5.9 million Covid deaths worldwide so far. Vaccines from various manufacturers have been offering a high level of protection against severe courses and death since the end of 2020. According to the university, more than ten billion doses have been administered to date. While rich countries in particular are already offering third and fourth partial vaccinations, poorer regions are lagging behind. In Austria, vaccines are available for all residents over the age of five. Nevertheless – and despite the fact that vaccination has been compulsory from the age of 18 since February – only 76 percent of the population (6.8 million people) have had at least one dose administered.
