Ended in Baku 2nd day international conference within Climate Action Weeks.

As Day.Az reported on Tuesday with reference to Trend, the main topics of the first day were energy transition and construction. The second day is devoted to the problems of water supply, food and agriculture.

As UN High-Level Climate Leader Nigar Arpadarai said at COP29, Azerbaijan will present the Harmonia initiative for farmers at COP29.

“At COP29, we will present the Baku Harmonia Climate Initiative for Farmers. This initiative will bring together various projects aimed at supporting farmers, rural villages and communities in the face of climate change. It will also develop guidelines for these communities to receive financing and other assistance,” – she emphasized.

Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, President of COP29 Mukhtar Babayev, climate change seriously affects water and food resources, and depletion of water resources leads to a number of diseases.

The minister noted that the impact of climate change on agriculture is already noticeable.

“Agriculture makes up a significant part of Azerbaijan’s economy. Low rainfall in recent years has led to a 10 percent reduction in food collection. Water levels in the Caspian Sea have also dropped, which is seriously affecting the coastal zone. If we do not take action, these consequences will increase. Global warming could already displace two million people. More research and new systems are needed,” he added.

Chief Scientist of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Ismahane Elouafi said that Azerbaijan is one of the leading countries in the agenda and fight against climate change.

She noted that Azerbaijan also faces a number of problems related to climate change.

“By 2050, water scarcity will become even more severe around the world. Climate change has already altered the water cycle at the global level. Just water transitions must be taken into account in agriculture. Our agricultural research must be evidence-based,” she added. .

The director of the Islamic Development Bank’s Sustainability and Climate Action Department, Syed Husain Quadri, said that last year, Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) committed a record $125 billion in climate finance around the world.

“Of this amount, $25 billion was allocated for adaptation to climate change,” he noted.

According to him, the IDB, when financing, pays attention to projects focused on more efficient management of water resources, with an emphasis on initiatives aimed at rational use of water in arid regions.

“The second area is supporting sustainable agriculture, including projects that promote the development of resistant varieties of crops. And finally, the third priority area is strengthening early warning systems to reduce the risks of natural disasters,” he emphasized.

The Week of Action runs from September 30 to October 4, 2024 and is being held in Baku for the first time.

It should be noted that this event will form the basis of the climate agenda ahead of COP29 in Baku in November.

Climate Action Week brings together key stakeholders from a range of sectors such as politics, finance, trade, investment, science, arts, culture, civil society and media.

The first half of the week (September 30 – October 2) is dedicated to climate solutions involving government agencies, academia and the private sector. In the second half (October 3-4), the emphasis will be on science, education, art, culture and other sectors.

As part of climate week, many events will be organized in various parts of the capital.
