The used car market has recovered slightly over the summer, with older vehicles losing weight to more modern used vehicles.

Sales of second-hand cars and SUVs accumulate a rise of 2.6% until August compared to the same period last year, with a total of 1,237,670 units, according to MSI data for employers in the sector Ganvam (official and independent distributors) and Faconauto (dealers). In this way, so far this year, 1.9 used vehicles have been sold for each new vehicle.

Sales of passenger cars between 10 and 15 years old continue to decline and accumulate a decrease of almost 17% so far this year.

Only in August, operations with used vehicles remained practically stable (+0.7%) compared to the same month last year, reaching 139,430 units. In this sense, the data shows how sales with models between ten and fifteen years old plummeted 19% last month and accumulate a setback of almost 16.7% so far this year, as a consequence, above all, that the operations carried out by private sellers fell by 4.5% last month.

On the other hand, the renewal of leasing fleets and rental companies is allowing young used cars, which are in high demand for their quality/price ratio, to regain prominence. Specifically, used car sales grew by 55.3% in August and have accumulated a rise of 52.4% so far this year. For their part, used operations from lease contracts that have already ended rose 35.8% last month and almost 25% up to August.

This explains that, although the models that accumulate the most growth are those that are between five and ten years old (+16.7%), those between one and three years old are pulling significantly from the market. In fact, last month its sales rose almost 15% and have accumulated a rise of 12% until August.

Hybrid, electric and ECO

Regarding energy sources, although the majority propulsion in the second-hand market is diesel (56% of the total), its sales fell by 2.7% in August. So far this year, they moderate their decline to 1.7%, with a total of 694,998 units sold. Gasoline engines, on the other hand, reversed the July trend and registered a positive sign (+0.9%) in August. So far this year, they have risen by almost 5%, concentrating 36.8% of the total market.

Regarding alternative propulsions, sales with second-hand pure electric models grew by 19.4% in August, with 856 units, although they have accumulated a decrease of 10.7% so far this year, to stand at the 7,064 units, which is barely 0.6% of the total. Plug-in hybrids continue to gain prominence and accumulate a total of 10,344 units sold, which is 10.2% more up to August.
