Sales of used cars and SUVs rose 3.7% in May, registering a total of 167,379 units, according to the employers’ associations in the Faconauto (dealerships) and Ganvam (official and independent distributors) sector. During the past month, for each new vehicle, 1.5 used ones were sold, and so far this year, the used market accumulates a total of 775,865 operations, which represents 3.3% more.

The increase in sales is mainly due to the increase in operations with second-hand vehicles from fleets; above all, rent a car, which increased by 40%, reaching 7,987 units. So far this year they have accumulated a rise of 60.8%. For their part, used sales from leasing contracts grew by 26.3% last month, reaching 11,897 units. Until May they accumulate an increase of 19.5%, with a total of 55,295 units.

This recovery in the supply of used vehicles from fleets explains the drop in imports, which fell by 15.7% last month, as well as the increase in sales of models between 1 and 3 years old, which rose by more than one 16% in May.

On the other hand, operations with second-hand pure electric cars remained downward, with a decrease of 13.6% until May, with a total of 4,397 units sold, which represents 0.6% of the total market.

In his case, sales of plug-in hybrids/occasion gasoline rose 16.6% so far this year, reaching 5,890 units. By contrast, second-hand diesel/plug-in electrics plummeted 60.7% through May, with 334 units sold.

Used with more than 15 years

Despite the recovery in the supply of young used vehicles, models over 15 years old had a significant weight in sales last month. 41% of the transactions carried out in May featured a car of this age, which is 9.5% more than in May of last year.

For the communication director of GANVAM, Tania Puche, “the market is still more than 6% below pre-pandemic levels and at the current rate, 2023 will not exceed the barrier of two million units either. These figures show that our used market needs a quantitative, but also a qualitative improvement, judging by the chronic prominence of models over 15 years old, which highlights the urgent need to turn efficient and safe mobility into an option more affordable and accessible.

According to the communication director of FACONAUTORaúl Morales, “the used market of 2023 is beginning to resemble that of the pre-pandemic, with the used “young” up to five years old growing more strongly, thanks to a better behavior of new registrations, but also, and This is the bad news, with an insane role for models over 15 years old, which account for 41% of transactions.

Regarding energy sources, operations with used diesel vehicles -which represented 56% of operations until May- maintain the downward trend of previous months and have contracted 1.4% so far this year. Gasoline, in contrast, increased by 6.2% up to May, with a total of 286,814 units sold.
