Second life: from “Irony of Fate” to “Bitter!”

by time news

In the midst of a cultural boycott of Russia, The Irony of Fate in Hollywood, a remake of the Soviet hit by Eldar Ryazanov, is released in the US. Until February 2022, news that foreign companies were buying the format of this or that Russian series or film appeared regularly, from Night Watch to Kholop. But few reached production.

Released on the eve of 2008, the sequel to The Irony of Fate by Timur Bekmambetov became at that time the highest-grossing Russian film (more than 1 billion rubles in fees and almost 8 million viewers – according to the Bulletin of the Film Distributor). But it is unlikely that Marius Weisberg’s remake will repeat the success of its predecessor, even in the face of a content hunger. Only the plot remained from the original, American artists are unknown to a wide range of Russian viewers. The American version is also unlikely to break any records – for the local audience, this is just another romantic comedy.
