The New York Times reported that Cairo and Tel Aviv are holding secret talks regarding the possible withdrawal of Israeli occupation soldiers from the Philadelphi Corridor on the border strip between the Gaza Strip and the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula.

The newspaper quoted Israeli officials and a senior Western diplomat as saying that the withdrawal would remove one of the most important obstacles to concluding a ceasefire agreement in Gaza between the Israeli occupation and Hamas.

The American newspaper pointed out that the ceasefire negotiations have apparently gained greater momentum in recent days, despite the fact that a number of points of contention remain, the most important of which is the duration of the ceasefire, as Hamas demands a permanent end to the war, while the Israeli side insists on adhering to a temporary ceasefire.

On May 29, the Israeli occupation army announced that it had taken full control of the Philadelphi Corridor, and claimed at the time that it had discovered no less than 20 tunnels crossing from Gaza to the Egyptian Sinai territories, according to the private Hebrew Channel 12.

However, a high-ranking Egyptian official denied at the time the existence of tunnels crossing from Gaza to Sinai, and considered them lies spread by Tel Aviv with the aim of covering up its military failure in Gaza, according to what was reported by the private Egyptian channel “Cairo News”.
