This virtual meeting of the Security Council is being held with the participation of the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, as well as the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Riyad Al Maliki.

It comes as this new cycle of violence has been continuing for several days, particularly in the occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank and Gaza, as well as in East Al-Quds.

At least 149 people have died in Gaza and 10 others in Israel since the start of the escalation last Monday, including 41 Palestinian children and two Israeli children.

In a statement released by his spokesperson on Saturday, the UN Secretary-General said he was “appalled” by the growing number of civilian casualties.

“The Secretary-General reminds all parties that any indiscriminate targeting of civilian and media facilities violates international law and must be avoided at all costs,” said the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, after Israeli strikes also targeted buildings housing international media in Gaza.
