An opportunity for them to officially launch the activities of the residency project for the creation of sculptural works called “cross-competence”.

“The fire of origins », it is under this theme that the 3rd edition of the International Biennial of Sculpture of Ouagadougou will be held, a biennial dedicated to contemporary sculpture on Africa. This activity aims to be an artistic event of Africa and its diaspora dedicated to sculpture in all its forms to support visual artists in their creations and the commissioning of their works.

Thus, several activities will be carried out during this edition. The flagship event is ”the residences” which consists of bringing together around twenty sculptors and performers from several African countries. Exhibitions and master classes are also planned. The major innovation of this great cultural event, according to Nyaba Léon Ouédraogo, president of BISO, is the collectors’ night which aims to mobilize potential buyers for the promotion of artistic works.

For him, this edition is also the place to pay tribute to the Burkinabè metallurgical tradition, to the fire of the oven and the forge. ” The Ouagadougou International Sculpture Biennial is a biennial that brings together around twenty artists from the African continent and the diaspora who try to produce artistic thought. I think that sculpture is the very matrix of our creation (…) because sculpture is part of our common heritage “, he said.

”Without art no country can develop”

Faced with the security crisis in Burkina Faso, the president of BISO suggested that sculpture plays a very important role in the return of security through these different messages of peace, cohesion and living together.

« In times of war, we artists are there to defend those values, because those are the values that the terrorists want to take away from us. And without culture, without art, no country can develop “, said Nyaba Léon Ouédraogo.

Christophe Sawadogo is a painter selected to take part in the 3rd edition of the International Biennial of Sculpture. During this activity, he greeted the initiators for holding this event. For him, this cultural meeting will allow him to show his know-how to face the security challenge.

”An opportunity to show the novelties we have made”

« It’s really an opportunity to allow artists of other nationalities to rub shoulders with artists and their practice. At the national level, I think it’s something that will allow artists together to magnify their creation, to magnify their practice beyond the crises we are experiencing today. (…) It will really be an opportunity to show the novelties that we have produced within the framework of this biennale that we are preparing “, he said.

The French Institute of Ouagadougou is one of the partners of the 3rd edition of BISO. Pierre Muller, cultural attaché deputy director of the French Institute of Ouagadougou showed the availability of his institution to accompany and support cultural events. ” We are there alongside the artists, alongside the initiatives. So it is very important that during this period the Institut français can continue to be alongside creation in Burkina Faso. “, he said.
