Luis Suarez will leave Grêmio at the end of the season. This Tuesday, the Uruguayan striker received the Farroupilha Medal of Merit, the highest honor that can be granted by the Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul. After the ceremony, Suárez gave a farewell speech to the club and the city.

The former Liverpool and FC Barcelona player praised and thanked everyone and everything who was part of his time in Porto Alegre. «I want to thank the people of Rio Grande do Sul for the affection with which they treated me from the first day. It’s confirmation of a big decision that my family and I made, to come here, to a city, a country that we love very much and where we knew we would be fine”, he began by saying.

«What we did was enjoy it from day one. Enjoy all the beauty of Porto Alegre, the surroundings of Rio Grande do Sul. I’m left with the affection that the people from Grêmio and Internacional gave me, because whether we like it or not, there is a rivalry, but I took lots of photos with people [do Internacional] and this has to unite football. Inter fans coming to ask me for photos has to be a beautiful message. Once again, I want to thank everyone. It was a pride and a pleasure. See you soon», he said.

At the age of 36, Luis Suárez takes 26 goals and 16 assists in 51 games with the Brazilian club’s jersey. The striker still has three more games until the end of the season, two of them in front of the Tricolor fans.
