Faced with the explosion of energy prices, Europe will cap the income of electricity producers. European energy ministers agreed on Friday on this emergency measure to help households and businesses. The agreement also imposes on Member States the binding objective of reducing their electricity consumption by at least 5% during peak hours, coupled with an indicative objective of 10%. A first step by which the EU hopes to draw a windfall of 140 billion euros, in principle intended to help individuals pay their energy bills.

But the question of the price of gas is much more thorny. Pressed by the Member States, the Commission is discussing several avenues ahead of the action plan it will propose on Tuesday.
