There is always something going on with Ségolène Royal. And so, in itself, the invitation of the former socialist presidential candidate to the back-to-school event of La France insoumise (LFI), the summer Amfis, had something to catch the eye. But we did not expect to come out of the room with a declaration of candidacy for a unitary list for the European elections next June with LFI. “It is a question of launching a dynamic of union”, she declared to journalists a little disconcerted. And not just any dynamic of union: with her at its head. Remember, however, that EELV has designated its head of the list (Marie Toussaint), as well as the PCF (Léon Desfontaines). The boss of the PS, he no longer sees a way for the union with the Europeans. The work of the union is not immense, it is almost already finished.
The rebels caught up in speed
For some time, the rumor – already extravagant – of a Ségolène Royal at the top of the list of rebels in the event of division of the Nupes, a sort of luxury plan B, has been circulating. His support for Jean-Luc Mélenchon during the 2022 presidential election was particularly appreciated by the rebellious, who see it as one of the turning points of the campaign. A few weeks ago, in private, a rebellious feathered chef weaved him emotional praise, rare for a minister of François Hollande. Until this is the new strategy of the rebellious to try to impose the union of the left, we did not see it coming.
Perhaps the rebellious themselves either. After the declarations of the former Minister of Ecology, the coordinator of LFI, Manuel Bompard, temporized, simply welcoming that she supports “like Benoît Hamon or Jérôme Guedj” a list of union with Europeans. “As for the head of the list, we have already said that we are ready for it not to come from our ranks. Of course, for this, it must be able to unite the forces of Nupes and carry out its program. “Ségolène Royal made this announcement alone? “Yes, that’s it,” says very directly Manon Aubry, the head of the LFI list for 2019.
“The Unitarians”
Covertly, an executive of the movement admits being overtaken, but not backwards: “She went further than we thought, but it suits us very well that she is available. “The afternoon with the already colorful scenario finally poured into the “Black Baron” when, after yet another passionate defense of a Nupes list in the Europeans, Jean-Luc Mélenchon launches: “We want a victory, it that’s what we’re working on! So either there will be a union list or there will be a list of ”Unitarians”. Meditate! ” Eh ? “The union list is the one we want to do with all the components of Nupes. The list of ”Unitaires”, we would do it with all those who are available to do it with us”, specifies shortly after Manuel Bompard.
A list of “Unitaires” with Ségolène Royal, then? “She or another social democratic elephant, it’s a tactical blow likely to bring us a small commando in the European Parliament. As long as we have Marina Mesure and Manon Aubry, and we add two colleagues as smart, we will put the souk there. There it is, the luxury plan B. With such a war prize LFI thinks it can say that the union is at home, not elsewhere: “With her and us, we cover all of Nupes! », dares the same frame. This is the story.
Change the game
Frankly, we do not really know what will remain of this “coup” of August 25, 2023 in Châteauneuf-sur-Isère on June 9, the evening of the European elections. “Nothing at all” remains the most likely option. It is hard to imagine rebellious people, of whom one wonders if they do not pretend to control events that partly escape them, going on a campaign with a Ségolène Royal who is difficult to control at their head. And then it can move who in the Nupes? Probably not many people.
But there are people who in a deadlocked political situation know how to create the event: literally try to change the situation. Politics is also the art of taking the risk of initiatives to break or stimulate dynamics, to seize opportunities that no one else has seen. Ségolène Royal and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, with all their faults, are such people. Before knowing if it misses or it works, seen up close, it remains stunning.
