Moscow: Kyiv is on the verge of collapse as the Russian occupation enters its 14th day. Authorities have reportedly decided to bury the bodies of those who died on the streets of the southern port city of Mariupol, surrounded by Russian troops.
An 80-foot-deep pit was dug in an old cemetery in the city. Volunteers found 30 bodies yesterday and 40 bodies on the streets of Mariupol on Tuesday. This includes the bodies of civilians and soldiers. Deputy Mayor Sergei Orlov says 1,200 innocent people have been killed in Russian attacks in Mariupol.
Russia yesterday gave the green light for evacuation operations in six strategic areas, including two suburbs of Kiev. A ceasefire was announced for this. However, fears of an imminent attack had spread throughout Kiev and people had been evacuated to bomb shelters.
According to the Red Cross, the situation in Mariupol is critical. Food shortages are severe. Many are melting ice for water. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba has accused Russia of holding 400,000 people hostage, preventing the evacuation of Mariupol. Russia announced a ceasefire in Mariupol yesterday.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian media reported that 20,000 foreigners had arrived to volunteer for Ukraine to fight against Russia. However, the U.S. came out yesterday against Poland’s decision to supply Ukraine with Russian – made MiG – 29 fighter jets. The Pentagon said in a statement that the decision was “suspicious” and “not in line with NATO policy.” NATO had earlier stated that it would not be part of the war.
