Self-Directed Education: A Training for Learning Facilitators & Personal Growth

The question of how we learn – and how You can foster genuine learning in others – has occupied educators and thinkers for generations. Increasingly, the conversation is shifting away from traditional models of schooling and toward a recognition that learning is a natural, lifelong process, intrinsically linked to being alive. This shift is at the heart of a growing movement focused on self-determined education, and it’s why, in March 2026, I’ll be co-facilitating a training program to support others in this approach. This isn’t about optimizing children; it’s about returning to a more fundamental understanding of what it means to learn and grow.

For over twelve years, I worked at a music school, gradually evolving my teaching methods from conventional structures to a practice rooted in self-determined education. Alongside this, I’ve supported families, translated resources, delivered presentations, and consulted with learning environments. Through all of this, a consistent theme emerged: the biggest obstacle to learning isn’t usually the children themselves, but the adults around them. This isn’t a matter of failure, but a reflection of the systems many of us grew up in – systems prioritizing control, assessment, and conformity.

The Core of Self-Determined Education: Unlearning and Reframing

Self-determined education, isn’t primarily about giving children freedom; it’s about adults beginning a process of “deconditioning.” It requires us to examine and challenge our ingrained beliefs about learning, responsibility, and power. This perform is deeply personal, often requiring us to confront our own experiences and biases. It’s a process of unlearning what we thought we knew and opening ourselves to new possibilities.

The Helping the Butterfly Hatch (HtBH) training program, developed by Je’anna Clements, is designed to facilitate this internal work. Clements has spent over 18 years guiding international learning companions, parents, and communities in self-determined education, child-rights-based approaches, and horizontal communication. HtBH isn’t a course focused on specific methods or tools; it’s a space for cultivating a particular mindset – one centered on posture, relationship skills, self-reflection, collaborative thinking, and a willingness to unlearn.

Clements often describes self-determined education as a path of personal development, noting that truly empowering young people to take ownership of their learning inevitably leads to our own healing and growth. The training is geared toward individuals who wish to support learning environments characterized by dignity, trust, connection, and self-determination – for children, adolescents, and adults.

Expanding Access: German and French Language Support

The core HtBH course is delivered in English by Je’anna Clements. Recognizing the need for broader accessibility, a collaborative effort is underway to offer the course with accompanying support in both German and French. This co-facilitation model will involve translating all presentations and supplementary materials, providing subtitles for course videos, offering optional calls in German and French, and bridging the gap between the English-language core curriculum and local contexts.

This means participants can fully engage with the international course while simultaneously reflecting, questioning, and integrating the material in their native language. The goal is to create a richer, more nuanced learning experience that is responsive to diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Who is This Training For – and Who Might It Not Serve?

This training is ideal for those who aspire to become learning companions, deepen their existing practice, work with children, engage in community-based learning initiatives, or simply view themselves as lifelong learners willing to challenge their own assumptions. It’s for individuals who are open to exploring new ways of thinking about education and are committed to fostering environments where young people can thrive.

However, this training isn’t necessarily suited for those seeking quick fixes, prescriptive solutions, or methods for “motivating” children. It’s not about refining control mechanisms, but about relinquishing them. It’s not a program for optimizing children, but a space for clarifying our own roles as adults.

A Community-Driven Initiative

I am part of a community-building initiative in Germany focused on creating a life and learning environment where individuals – particularly young people – can experience agency, dignity, and self-determination in practice. Our community has collectively decided to participate in the Learning Companion Training together, not as a prerequisite for membership, but because we recognize the value of a shared language, common concepts, and a unified frame of reference.

Importantly, the training is open to anyone interested, independent of their affiliation with our community. The course runs for nine months, starting on March 15, 2026, with live calls twice a month and approximately 30 minutes of course videos per week.
