Self-driving cars see children and some skin colors less well | Tech

Researcher Jie Zhang and her colleagues studied eight systems used by developers of autonomous cars to detect pedestrians. Adults were recognized up to twenty percent better than children. They move in a different way and are of course smaller.

The models may also not be well trained to recognize people with a dark skin color, Zhang thinks. This is possible, for example, because the photos and videos used to train AI are insufficiently diverse. In other words, the computer has seen more people with a light skin color to ‘learn’ what a pedestrian is and can therefore recognize them better.

The scientists are now calling on the government to impose stricter rules on the manufacturers of such systems. That way they can be forced to improve their technology. They also need to be more transparent about the data and the systems they use in their vehicles, they believe.
