A video of Google’s self-driving, driverless taxi ‘Waymo’ driving in the wrong direction in the United States and being caught by the police has spread through the media and social media (SNS), becoming a hot topic.

According to American media outlets such as the New York Post on the 4th (local time), the incident occurred on the 19th of last month on a road in Phoenix, Arizona in southwestern Arizona. At the time, local police discovered a Waymo vehicle driving in the wrong direction while ignoring a traffic light, chased it, and stopped it.

Footage from police body cameras shows that as the officer approached the stopped Waymo vehicle, the driver’s window rolled down automatically. The officer said, “Hello,” and a company representative was called.

When the officer said, “This vehicle was traveling in the opposite lane,” the dispatcher responded, “Okay, I’ll check right away.” The officer added, “(The vehicle) went through a construction zone and went into the opposite lane. It was a dangerous situation.” The New York Post reported that company personnel were later on scene to address the issue.

Waymo said the vehicle encountered an “inconsistent construction sign” and entered the opposite lane. It continued to drive in the opposite direction for about 30 seconds before police stopped the car. Fortunately, there were no passengers and no other vehicles nearby, so no accident occurred. Police jokingly said, “The incident was closed without further action because the computer could not issue a fine.”

Meanwhile, according to the police and Waymo, the self-driving taxi can detect emergency vehicles and sirens and stop. It also explained that when the vehicle stops, it can automatically unlock the doors and roll down the windows. And, as shown in the video, the police officer can call the person in charge and resolve the issue.

Although it ended as a minor incident, netizens who saw the video showed serious reactions. Comments continued, such as, “The self-driving car company should be fined,” “What would have happened if they killed a person,” and “I would never ride in a self-driving car or drone.”

Phoenix is one of the few cities in the U.S. that has allowed autonomous vehicles to operate. However, concerns about the safety of autonomous vehicles are growing as accidents of various sizes continue to occur.
