Self-repair shop begins taking orders for “MacBook Air and MacBook Pro”

Apple, the company that owns iPhones, Mac devices and accessories, announced (Monday, 08-22-2022) that it has started accepting maintenance requests through the Self Service Repair Store website on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro devices.

The online store was briefly unavailable on Tuesday morning, while the site was updated to reflect Apple’s expansion of the self-service repair program to Mac computers.

Owners of MacBook Air and MacBook Pro versions equipped with M1 processors can now obtain repair manuals, parts and original tools from Apple via the Store. There are no manuals or parts available for M2 Macs or desktop Macs yet.

Apple launched an iPhone self-service repair earlier this year for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. For the Mac, the software works as it works with the iPhone, obliging customers to review the repair guide first before visiting a self-repair store to order.

MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Self-Service Repair offers more than a dozen different types of repair for each model, including the display, top bezel with battery, and trackpad with more coming in the future, according to Apple.

Apple will offer rental kits for $49 to customers who don’t want to buy tools for a single repair, giving them access to a one-week kit with free shipping. Customers can send replaced parts back to Apple for refurbishment and recycling, and often receive credit for purchasing the repair in the process.

The program currently only works in the US, but Apple says it will expand to Europe later this year. Apple also plans to make parts and manuals available for additional Apple Silicon Mac models later this year.
