Selling Old Hallmark Jewelry in Tamil Nadu: 3-Month Timeline

The Indian government has granted a 3-month window to a specific group of 16,000 jewelers who are not currently selling gold jewelry and items branded with the ‘Hallmark’ certification mark. Starting April 1, the government mandated that all gold-based products must have a new 6-digit BIS and Hallmark certification mark. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs issued a notification stating the 16,000 authorized jewelers have until the end of June to sell their stock of non-branded jewelry. After this deadline, only registered jewelers can sell gold jewelry with the 6-digit hallmark certification mark. This permission is non-extendable beyond the 3-month window.

New Delhi: The central government has given 3 months time to only 16,000 jewelers who are not selling ‘Hallmark’ branded gold jewelery and items to sell old jewellery.

From April 1, the central government had mandated that only gold jewelery and gold-based products should be sold with the new 6-digit BIS and Hallmark certification mark for gold and gold-based products.

Permission to sell

In this case, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs has issued a notification in the gazette.

It says:

From 1st April this year, a 6-digit BSI hallmark has been mandated for all gold products.

In this case, in a consultation meeting held with experts and jewelers, 16,000 jewelers have been given three months’ time to sell hallmarked jewelery by the old method before July 2021.

According to this, this period is given till the coming 30th of June. Within this time limit, authorized jewelers are allowed by the Ministry to sell their stock.

This was stated in the notification.

Niti Khare, Additional Secretary, Consumer Affairs, said:

There are 1.56 lakh registered jewelery shops across the country. Of these, 16 thousand, 243 jewelers have been allowed to sell their old hallmarked jewelery by June 30 this year.

No extension

This permission is given for 3 months only. This is the deadline. Thereafter, the period shall not be extended.

Apart from these authorized jewellers, the rest of the registered jewelers will be able to sell gold jewelery only with the 6-digit hallmark from April 1.
