Jakarta: The Semeru volcano on the Indonesian island of Java has erupted. According to the latest available information, one person has been reported killed. Indonesian media reported that 41 people were injured. Three people are missing. Dozens of homes were damaged. The bomber struck shortly after 2.50pm local time. The ash rose to an altitude of 40,000 feet.
The area was filled with strong smoke and ash as a result of the volcanic eruption. Video footage of locals fleeing villages in East Java province after the blast has been released. The fire and lava flowed strongly into populated areas.
The relocation of people from the area has intensified. Heavy smoke from Semeru is hampering rescue efforts. At the same time, the blast has not yet disrupted air traffic in the area. Semeru is the highest volcano on the island of Java. There are about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia. There were also explosions in Semeru last January, but there were no casualties.
