Within the framework of the activities of the Month of the Sea 2023, the seminar “Navigating through science” was developed at the University of Magallanes, establishing a meeting point with different entities of the scientific world of the Magallanes Region and the Chilean Territory. Antarctic.

The occasion was attended by the Maritime Governor of Punta Arenas, Coastal Ship Captain Juan Pablo Colipí, who welcomed the participants who arrived at the Ernesto Livacic auditorium, an activity that was broadcast via streaming on UMAG TV.

The first exhibition was developed by Doctor Max Frangopulus, who developed part of his research on Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB).

In the second presentation of the day, the Administrator of Asmar Magallanes, Captain Gonzalo Mitrovich, spoke about the different projects of the southernmost shipyard in the world, highlighting the hybrid energy efficiency project, a prototype developed in conjunction with Lambda Ingenieros, which seeks to be an option to direct the industry towards carbon neutrality in isolated areas.

Next, Dr. Johanna Marambio, from the Cape Horn International Center, spoke about the importance of the study in the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic zone, where kelp forests and their importance in biodiversity are essential for our ecosystem.

On behalf of INACH, there was a presentation by Doctor Andrés López, INACH Technical Subdirector, regarding the project for monitoring meteorological conditions in the Chilean Antarctic Territory through a network of automatic stations, which will allow an important part of the information to be understood. the dynamics in Antarctica and how they influence the American continent; Subsequently, Dr. Ricardo Jaña, INACH researcher, spoke about the importance of understanding the Antarctic continent, its dynamics and challenges, as well as important efforts being developed in the scientific field in that inhospitable territory.

Finally, the Head of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Meteorological Center, First Lieutenant Gonzalo Bertolotto, spoke about the methodological challenges in the Antarctic continent, the particularities in their understanding and study, as well as the work of the southernmost Maritime Meteorological Center in the world in the support for the development of scientific commissions and logistical support.

In his closing remarks, the Maritime Governor of Punta Arenas, Coastal Ship Captain Juan Pablo Colipí, summarized each of the presentations, thanking the participants and exhibitors at the event.
